Thai passengers took to social media to complain about an airline that left them struggling to breathe on a plane for over an hour due to an engine failure.Ā The incident reportedly occurred on a Nok Air flight from Bangkok to the southern province of Songkhla.
A Thai woman shared her experience on a flight from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport to Hat Yai International Airport in Songkhla on her TikTok account, Milkyway.mkw. She posted a video of the incident and recounted the ordeal in the caption.
The video showed passengers, predominantly Thais, resorting to using airline brochures as makeshift fans while stranded on the plane amidst a scorching day on May 4. The woman elaborated that the plane’s engine experienced failure during takeoff, and despite the pilot’s efforts, it could not be restarted, resulting in their prolonged stay on the runway.
She added that the air conditioning system was inoperative. Despite flight attendants’ efforts to alleviate the discomfort by serving cold water, it proved ineffective. After an hour elapsed, the plane was towed back to its original parking spot.
Passengers waited in the terminal until they were informed the plane was ready to reattempt takeoff. They boarded the same plane, only to experience another engine failure. The woman reported that passengers expressed anger and concern for their safety.
The airline promised to swap planes and escorted passengers back to the terminal, offering compensation in the form of a doughnut and a bottle of water. Eventually, the flight took off at 6.05pm, significantly delayed from its scheduled departure time of 1.20pm.
Several other passengers took to social media to share videos of their ordeal, condemning the airline’s handling of the situation.
Passengers are calling on the airline to provide an explanation and suitable compensation. However, Nok Air, the airline implicated in the incident, has yet to officially address the matter.
